RIC 2019 Le Vesinet – Programme

WELCOME TO THE

2019 IMPERIAL RIC in RUEIL MALMAISON

May 17th to 19th 2019

Hosted by
ROTARY CLUB LE VESINET

Napoléon and Joséphine in 2019 – Click to hear their message!

Dear RIC Fellows,

Rotary-Club Le Vésinet will be happy to welcome you to the 2019 RIC-Meeting.

During your stay at Rueil Malmaison, we shall pay tribute to Napoleon and Josephine. To quote Napoleon: “The word ‘Impossible‘ is not French”. And like Napoleon’s troops who marched in time to music, our Club has decided to organise a “Dance Battle” with all RIC Club members…

Napoleon was always one step ahead – so all our Club members have been learning a dance, THE MADISON, during their meetings. We will dance it “in troop” all together.

Now you can do the same… On Friday evening, we’d like you also to dance the Madison – and in addition, to select your own (local, folk, national) dance, to be presented by you on Friday evening!

Save the dates of the 17th to 19th May 2019, they will be engraved in the memories of RIC forever…

Philippe Pellassy, President

The modern town of Rueil-Malmaison, located less than ten kilometres west of Paris, has succeeded in preserving its authentic spirit and charm by taking you on a surprising trip back into France’s imperial period. Indeed, Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Josephine left many traces of their lives in Rueil-Malmaison, first during the Consulate and then during the first years of the Empire.

The “Ville Impériale” brand was created in October 2011 by the city of Rueil-Malmaison in partnership with the cities of Compiègne, Fontainebleau and Saint-Cloud. The aim of the brand is to unite the French cities, the history and heritage of which strongly link them to the First and Second Empire.

ARRIVAL

We will be waiting for you on May 17th from 1pm in the Novotel Hotel in Rueil Malmaison.

The Novotel is a spacious 4 star hotel situated at
21 Avenue Edouard Belin
92500
RUEIL MALMAISON

Parking facilities can be made available on request.

Click on the map for more detail.

FRIDAY EVENING

This year, the welcome drink at 4pm will be followed immediately by our AGM at 5pm in the hotel.

In the meantime, our partners will go by coach to the town of Rueil Malmaison. In particular, they can visit (guided visit) the church Saint Pierre and Saint Paul.

This listed building houses the tombs of Empress Josephine and her daughter, Queen Hortense, who expressed the desire to be buried beside her mother.
Josephine’s tomb, made of Carrara marble, was completed in 1825 and  is decorated with a statue by Cartellier. The statue represents the Empress kneeling, recalling, as desired by her children, David’s famous painting “The
Coronation of Napoleon”.
One can also admire the beautiful church organ case offered by Napoleon III and signed Bacchio d’Agniolo, and the beautiful bas-relief of the altar in gilded bronze designed in the 12th century by François Anguier for the Church of Val de Grace in Paris.

If time permits, partners can also jump into the nearby museum of the city's history.

The various rooms of the Museum bring together, by theme, the works, objects and memories that make up the memory of Rueil. One can discover 1,800 figurines representing Napoleon’s Great Army, the Laundry room, the Edouard Belin room (the inventor of the Belinograph, the forerunner of the fax) and the Eugene Capelle room evoking the history of the postcard. And in particular, many photographs of Rueil in the early 20th century.

The bus will be back at the hotel around 6:45 pm.

At about 7:30pm, the first coaches will leave for our happy-go-lucky evening

We shall spend our evening in the MAISON DE L’EUROPE in Rueil Malmaison, offering a huge hall allowing us to dance The Madison together, for each club to present a Local / Folk dance, to serve our buffet, and of course to open our bar. More information about the dancing below!

There's a nice terrace for those who want some fresh air, to smoke, or just to have a good chat.

Imperial RIC means imperial evening, of course. The right and befitting clothing could not be missing!

But we don’t expect you to all follow the French fashion of the Empire; on the contrary. Some (or all) of your members wearing a (piece of) garment of from your country, at the time of the Empire, would underline and cheer up this special international gathering!

FOLK DANCE

We would like each club to present a local/ folk dance which we hope you will also have rehearsed. In view of this, a folk costume would also be appreciated. Please be prepared to share with all participants a little general / historical explanation of your local/folk dance. The more members of your club who participate, the more your dance will be appreciated and valued!

THE MADISON

Don’t be afraid of The Madison. It’s an easy dance and you’ll have a lot of fun.

The dance consists of 4 x 4 basic steps before making a one-quarter turn and repeating the same sequence of steps.

Our club has been practising.

Now click on this image to see the result one hour later. Look how much better we are.
Err….

See this YouTube video to see how get it right!

For those with still a lot of energy (all of us?) a DJ will play music…

…until we return to the hotel by coach.

SATURDAY MORNING

On Saturday morning the members will start very early at 8 am to work for two hours in small commissions at the hotel…

…while the partners may sleep a little longer and then enjoy the breakfast buffet.

For those of the members who could not or did not want to have breakfast before our works, a lighter one will be available during our works.

We intend to create 3 commissions / work groups:

  • Future of the RIC
  • Water Projects
  • Education & Mother/Child Projects

Further information will follow.

At 9:30 am a coach will start rotations for our visit of the Château de Rueil Malmaison.

Acquired in 1799 by Josephine and Napoleon Bonaparte, the Château de Malmaison became the couple’s residence during the Consulate. Josephine organised many parties and banquets in this beautiful mansion which, along with the Tuileries Palace, was also where France’s main political decisions were made between 1800 and 1802. Joséphine died there on May 29th 1814.

The furniture, tapestries, wainscoting, paintings and numerous collections of artefacts from the imperial period make the Château de Malmaison a true gem of the 1st Empire.

Joséphine was a lover of roses and bred them. Her rose garden counted more than 200 species. The garden still testifies to it.

We will have lunch at the PAVILLON JOSEPHINE

The Pavillon Joséphine is classified in the  historical heritage of Rueil-Malmaison since 1897. It is located at walking distance from the Château de la Malmaison.

Marie-Françoise, widow of Jérôme (Montet), will give a brief lecture on Napoleon and his influence on the history of our RIC countries.

The President of the association RIVAGE, recipient of our donation for this year’s social project, will be present at the lunch.

After lunch the coach will take us to the landing stage on Chatou’s “Ile des Impressionnistes” island for a boat trip of around two hours…

…discovering and enjoying the beautiful surrounding of Rueil Malmaison and Chatou in music and with drinks (a must!)

We will be landing on the other side of the Seine
at about 5:30 pm, just 200 meters from the hotel.

At 7:30 pm we will leave by coach for our
Gala Dinner at the PAVILLON JOSEPHINE.

Our dinner will be served on the first floor of Pavillon Joséphine, which has an open air terrace.

Those liking the Empire can again wear garments of the time; but the dress code will still be informal / tenue de soirée.

After dinner, we shall have the whole ground floor at our disposal, with bar and music (DJ), for dancing, sitting, drinking………….

SUNDAY MORNING

After breakfast we will experience a little more of the time of the empire, with as variety of games in the nearby Parc des Impressionistes and on the banks of the River Seine – relaxing, unwinding, having fun.

Finally, there will be a brunch to strengthen you for your journey home, before we say our goodbyes at about 12:30.

You will be kept informed about further additions to our program though this page.
